Crafting Your Vision Statement: A Guide to Setting Intentions for the Year Ahead

As we step into a new year, it’s a powerful time to reflect, reset, and set intentions that will guide us through both the seasons of life and the physical year ahead. For us, this year’s theme is all about creating a “north star”—a vision statement that serves as both a personal compass and a source of grounding energy in everything we do.

In this post, I’ll walk you through a simple yet profound process to craft your own vision statement. It’s an exercise rooted in self-reflection and clarity, designed to help you align with your highest self, cultivate meaningful relationships, and make a positive impact on the world around you.

Step 1: Reflect on Key Areas of Your Life

Before you write your vision statement, take time to reflect on different aspects of your life. This will help you align your intentions with what truly matters to you. Here are a few guiding questions to help you:

1. Relationships

What kind of relationships do you want to cultivate this year?

  • Who are the people you want to connect with, and what kind of energy do you want to bring into those relationships?
  • Consider your intimate relationships, friendships, family dynamics, and community connections.
  • How do you want to feel in these relationships?

2. Contribution

What kind of impact do you want to have on the world?

  • Think about your work, volunteerism, or any service-oriented activities.
  • Who are you helping, and how does this make you feel?
  • How do you want your actions to contribute to the greater good?

3. Highest Self

Imagine yourself at the end of the year, having fully expressed your highest potential.

  • How have you grown in these areas: intellectually, physically, spiritually, and mentally?
  • What steps will you take to develop yourself?
  • What new habits or mindsets will you adopt?

Step 2: Craft Your Vision Statement

Now, let’s get to the fun part—writing your vision statement! This is where you get to declare your intentions for the year in the present tense. This makes the statement feel grounded and alive in the here and now.

Here’s a simple framework to follow:

  • Begin with an “I am” statement.
  • Follow with “so it is” to affirm your commitment.
  • Keep it in the present tense, as if you are already living this version of yourself.

For example, your statement might sound like:
“I am a loving partner and friend, surrounded by nurturing relationships. I am making a meaningful impact in my community and feel fulfilled in my contributions. I am physically strong, mentally sharp, spiritually connected, and constantly evolving.”

Step 3: Use Affirming Language

It’s important to use positive, affirming language in your vision statement. Stay clear and precise about what you want to embody. Avoid using double negatives, as they can create confusion. For example, instead of saying, “I don’t dwell on the past,” say, “I am rooted in the present, embracing each moment fully.” This subtle shift in language keeps your focus on what you want, not what you don’t.

Step 4: Connect With Your Vision Daily

Once you’ve crafted your vision statement, commit to reading it daily. This practice will help you connect with your highest expression and stay aligned with your intentions.

I’ve personally experienced profound shifts by reading my vision statement in moments when my brain is in a theta state—just after waking up or before going to sleep. These are powerful times for subconscious reprogramming and setting the tone for the day or night ahead.

Additional Resources

To support you in this process, I’ve provided a couple of resources:
